My dear, dear author-- I am speechless, and teary, which for me, is rare. So many things I want to write in my review! I may need to leave you several. Firstly, though, I'm so pleased that you enjoyed the research of the star-watcher king; he's fascinated me since reading the tale of Aldarion and Erendis and wish that there were more stories about him, especially if they were all as well-written as yours.
Secondly, you and I share Elfscribe as a friend, apparently, as she beta'ed my story! What a privilege.
And now. I am so very fortunate and feel that I've been given the most marvelous gift today, in reading your story. You brought the building of the tower to life, an aspect of Tar-Meneldur's life I hadn't even really thought about, and with such vivid detail and characters. Minardil I could see with my inner eye, and their correspondence when separated was such a delicious interlude. This undid me: "The stars do not like it when you are gone. Their luster wanes."
::takes ragged breath::
From the beginning through to the end, your pacing was sublime, the development of the relationship between the two men so bittersweet at first and, thusly, entirely believable. With this you have fleshed out Irimion's personality from canon in a way that will remain forever with me-- now I want to write another Numenor story, or return to the one I started several years ago.
And their intimacies, once Iri and Min were at long last allowed to join, was beautiful on myriad levels. It was erotic, and your wordcraft evocative without being at all saccharine.
This, my dear, is a spellbinding story; I felt that I'd been removed to Numenor and a part of their lives for the time I sat to savor this story. I will be reading it multiple times, and will most certainly guide as many readers as I can over to share in this superb written offering.
Thank you, thank you. I'm now going to need to find more of your stories!!

Author's Response:

Oh my, thank you so very much for your wonderful words.  Believe me, when I saw that I had written this for "Thevina" I shook all over with trepidation.  Elfscribe speaks so very highly of you and was extremely coy about the whole thing, telling me that she 99% sure who my requestor was.  As part of my research, in addition to canon, I went to all kinds of sites and actually used your bio of the Star-Watcher from HASA as one of my bases.  Imagine when I saw your name appended here - Oy!  I am thrilled to death that you thought I did his early life justice and that you enjoyed it.  And oh, but didn't I have fun.  I'm not the writer that Elfscribe or Kenaz or several others I could name is/are - but oh, I do love, love, love the research involved in any endeavor  And it was absolutely wonderful to immerse myself in a place and time that I've never really read or considered.  I'm humbled by your words and and thank you for them, most kindly.  I rather fell in love with your Star-Watcher King and his Minardil during the writing myself!

Oh Jaiden. What a glorious story, so compelling and unique and with beautiful, memorable imagery! From this beginning:
the thread of time unspooled behind his eyes, weaving the present into a tapestry of things yet to come. I read with my mouth slightly agape at your beautiful wordcraft.
First, my general review: stunning. The idea of a Vala with a 'regular' Elf I've read only once before, and both that story and yours are just marvelous. You know that I'm pretty new to Tolkien slash featuring Elves, and this particular mingling of Vala to Elf has such potential and you've captured it vividly in this story. Irmo with his dark eyes, the piercings and how that eventually is gifted to Erestor... glorious.
Other particular phrases that jumped out at me and filled me with green writer's envy:
watched them glide to and fro like agile dancers moving nimbly to a choreographed routine.
Guh. All of the calling to Erestor, his name whispered on the wind... so quietly erotic! And the description of Irmo's house, the mosaic in the walls and the garden- simply exquisite and I could see it in my mind's eye. I wanted to go there!!
Erestor’s heart thundered. The apple was long forgotten. What he wanted now was in his grasp, and he leaned in until he could feel the boy’s warm breath on his lips. The kiss was tentative at first, slow and tantalizing, then deepening into a sweet rush of molten desire. Warm lips crushed together in the first aching wave of yearning.
Oh. My. I've not touched on first desires when individuals are so young, but the imagery of the apple and first lust brought to mind a scene from "The Amber Spyglass," and I found so tender and 'innocent' in their first passionate groping. You've awakened in me a theme/idea that I'd like to pursue in a future story!
And this whole paragraph:
Erestor had wanted this for so long, but each sparking twilight dream had shattered like glass at dawn. The bitter frustration he had felt each morning seemed like a distant memory, and now, as he lay on the grass, poised on the brink of it all, he held his breath in eager, writhing anticipation.

He welcomed the familiar pain with a gasp, knowing that sweetness followed as surely as night followed day. And follow it did, rolling through him in waves of pleasure that ebbed and flowed with each gentle rock of their bodies. They had coupled before, in other times, in other places, but never with the urgent intensity of this moment.

Just as their bodies joined, so did their spirits. It was as if a needle of consciousness pierced Erestor’s heart with a crimson thread and bound him fast to his lover. Each loving caress and soulful gaze pulled the thread tighter still until he knew not where he ended and the other began.

Being literally sewn together... you've lit the flare for the smidgen of romantic in me with that imagery!

I was swept away with this story. I'm so glad that you were assigned this person, and that you wrote what you did and shared it with us. Very well written, memorable, and a joy to read.

Author's Response:

What a wonderful, thoughtful review! I can't tell you how much that made my day. :) I'm always thrilled when another writer whose stories I admire finds mine interesting and enjoyable. Thank you.

I was quite intrigued by your premise, both because I'm a vocalist, and also because of the Elf/Vala relationship. I'm relatively new to reading Elf-centric Toklien stories (I was focused on other races before) and this idea of a relationship between an Elf and Vala has been explored a few times in stories that I've read. They seem bound to be angst-heavy, this Tolkien-esque version of the coupling of a human of god, which tends not to turn out well. Your story was particularly evocative since it dealt with Namo! I enjoyed the story and how fallible Namo was, falling for Lindir's captivating voice. Music can indeed ensnare the soul... ;)
I hope that your recipient enjoyed this story; I certainly did.

Author's Response:

Hi,

Thankyou for taking the time to read, and review, my story. I apologise for not replying sooner. I keep expecting this site to automatically notify me of reviews like most others do.

Anyway... I digress.

I'm very glad you thought so highly of my story. The recipient was happy with the outcome of their challenge, however they didn't want it to be so angsty. However, as you pointed out, most god/elf pairings do tend to be that way. I just can't see a relationship existing between two very different species without some turbulence to begin with. So, I hope I didn't overdo the angst for you or for my original recipient.

Music can indeed ensnare the soul... ;)

I don't doubt it for a moment. And I'm very happy to hear that a musician/volcalist approves of my theory, given that I have no musical ability at all! :D

Thankyou for your kind words,

Mawgy

This was such a lovely tale! Some of your imagery turned me green with writerly envy; the one of the low-lying fog resembling a prowling cat has remained with me since reading this yesterday. Such a wonderful turn of events for Melpomaen that a fairytale figure literally came to life for him, and eventually did succumb to his charms. The AU aspect of this was surprisingly canonical to me, and even with my jaded heart, I was so glad that they had a happy ending. Kudos to you for putting these two together believably and for spinning such a heartwarming tale.

Author's Response:

Thank you so much. Praise coming from someone who turns a phrase much better than I means a lot. I'm so glad you enjoyed it. :)

This is so belated, my apologies! Since I'm not as steeped in the various Elvish lineages, I did have to look up some of these individuals, but even I could appreciate how strange Erestor was feeling to be confronted by a former crush, and admired him for taking him on as a new lover once the opportunity presented itself. What struck me so much during my first reading (and again during this second) is the element of Eärwen. Writing it so that indeed it isn't a happy ever after with her saying, "Oh yes, go on honey," it rings incredibly true and realistic, especially among beings who are close to living forever as I've ever read. Even those who are thoroughly entrenched might discover different aspects to themselves over the millennia. There's a richness to your writing that I've read about relationships, and it shines in this story.

Thank you so, so much! I love reading Numenorean-based stories, and I'm thrilled that you chose to write about Tar-Aldarion. You've captured so well his marriage fraught with unhappiness (this sentence: "Many bitter words have flown since I have made my announcement a week ago and the air is fetid with ill-will." was fabulous!) and his love of the sea. That he indeed falls for Cirdan is wonderful to read, and their coupling was steamy and awkward-- a perfect union for Aldarion's first time with a man. I hope that within this 'verse he is allowed many, many such visits with the Shipwright!!
Thank you again for picking this particular prompt and for writing such an evocative story. I really appreciate your attention to canon detail and the characterizations that ring so true.

Author's Response:

I'm so glad you enjoyed the fic! Thank you.

Oh my dear! Thank you so much for the wonderful story. I loved the characterizations of both Aragorn and Faramir, and how Aragorn was still true to Arwen while acknowledging his love of the male form. What an absolutely delicious story. Thank you again!
