This is just so immensely well written. I have written both characters (and that gruff Celegorm as well), researched them and everything clicked as I read it. It is just them and as I always portrayed them in my mind. Actually, I just could not stop reading and I postponed several chores because I just wanted to see how both characters would grow through this all. Those oath's... those bloody oaths. One might shake their heads on how they have sworn them, but you made quite a good use of those in this story and how it shaped them as they had to endure all that has been thrown of them (although as I type this, I do have a complaining Celegorm giving me an earful that he does know how to breed horses *grin*).

What a tale, such great imagery and language. But oh Eru, these two lines...

“You of all men have no right to chide me for cleaving to my oath. I would rather be forsaken than forsworn.”

“You are already both, and damn you. You of all men know the cost of an oath kept.” A whisper of anguish. “Is it not written in me?”

Masterfully done and most definitely one of the best stories I have read in years.

Author's Response:

Hurrah! I aided with procrastination! My whole day has been a day of procrastination since I'd much rather answer reviews than do paperwork that's not due yet. :)

The oaths...the great tragedy of those oaths...I wanted to evoke their powerful presence without overwhelming the story. I wanted the characters to still believe, after all this time, that they had a choice in the matter, even if the choices came to nothing in the end, even if there was no real way they could alter their fates, I imagine they would still try. Out of desperation, more than anything. But their oaths would always come for them. They're not the kind of men to leave those unfulfilled, no matter what it brings them. That's hard to take.

Odd that you mention those two lines. Dialogue, a character's voice, usually comes to me a lot sooner than narrative or image. And those lines were some of the earliest written and least changed throughout the drafting process.

Thank you for such a kind review (and tell Celegorm to get that chip out of his shoulder and take it up with his brother. :) )

Renacimiento by Oshun Rated: Mature themes
Summary:

Maedhros has been celibate for longer than he even likes to consider. Elrond is a charming flirt with a massive crush who is saving himself for a special first time. I never pictured myself writing this one, but felt perversely attracted to it when I read the prompt. The recipient gave me a softer way out, the choice to go with another less controversial pairing. But after consideration, I fell for this one.

Oh the voices in this story! The mature and worn down Maedhros and the youthful and utterly brash Elrond finding each other. Both on the path to conquer another and you told the story in such an easy manner that made it incredibly pleasing to read (with a lot of chuckles, I mean the drunk Elrond thinking that in imbeding alcohol he'd have the guts and would look irresistable). But what I like the most is the portrayal of Maedhros: his longing and yet his endurable patience to let Elrond decide the moment and that he's ready for it. When that moment arrives, it is glorious and yet poignant. Probably an odd mix, but it absolutely worked for me! Well done!

Author's Response: What a lovely review, Rhapsody! I am thrilled that you liked it. I did work hard. I always say that. One is supposed to work hard but make it look easy. I love both Maedhros and Elrond in their hard canon versions so I just needed to think about warm-as-summer Elrond as a young guy and Maedhros in defeat, but with still enough life left in him to make that last push when the opportunity presented itself to get the Silmarilli back.

I simply love this idea of a year break from normal routine... even if it also would mean spending a year with someone who isn't your usual spouse. The interaction between them feels very natural and playful... just perfect :)

Author's Response:

Thank you!  Sometimes, you just need to get away to freshen up your brain and your spirit :-)

Fairytales are told down the generations, but like all oral traditions, they change and shift with the passing of time.

I enjoyed this tale of questing, combined with the fairy tale narration :) There is so much to this story that I loved (the oral tradition of story telling, the affection between Erestor and Glorfindel, and warrior Erestor!). Wonderfully written!

Author's Response:

Thank you! I'm glad the questing feel of the story came off, I'm often not so sure when I write action/adventure-ish type things XD (And Warrior Erestor FTW! XD)

Oh my, GG, what a treat! I always found Elenwë a canon character that intrigued me, especially since she is one of the known women who followed her husband across the ice to Middle-earth. What a testament of love that must have been and such a tragic fate. To see her paired up so wonderfully with Aredhel (also knowing how she cared for Elenwë's daughter): what a great friendship between those two. I just love how you portrayed Aredhel's pragmatical nature and the more fragile character of Elenwë who during this pregnancy surely must feel that she has to walk on egg shells (and those bloody hormones besides), the difficult dynamics of the Finwean family where even consulting a healer can be taken as a political move. Besides this all, you mix it with an idyllic afternoon off for both where reprieve is sought and granted. What more can I ask for? What a wonderful gift for Valentines day and thank you so much for writing this for me! <3

It really must have been hard for one of the Falathrim to stay his hand thusly. Círdan must have seen or spoken to so many who have suffered because of the oath, but I loved the act of mercy bestowed on this wayward Noldo. Well done!

Author's Response:

Thanks glad you liked it

This is an amazing piece! To think of Finrod's disbelief to have learnt of Maglor's actions at Losgar in connection with the bond they had... As for Losgar, I am now trying to imagine the look on Fëanor's and Maedhros face when Maglor decides to end their bickering, but also the impact it must have had on the brotherly bond between Maglor and his elder brother. Wonderfully done!

Kei, you did an amazing job with this story. Of course I simply marvel at your lush descriptions, the way you paint the city for the reader and making them feel as they are just there. In a quiet antechamber or moving with Glorfindel through the masses. This story breathed Noblesse oblige to me. The noble elite looks after those who cannot (in the Netherlands it is a very noble and normal thing to do for those who are high born).

It must have been hard to live in such a birthcage, where your house matters more than your personal wishes and needs, I think you captured this brilliantly when Glorfindel fell for Erestor. I feel for Glorfindel, feeling so trapped, but the last lines gives the reader hope that he will be freed from it and can bind himself to the one he loves and fits so well to him.

Author's Response:

Thanks for the lovely review, dear Rhaps, and for all your support. It means a lot to me.

Noblesse oblige, yes, or like the system of patronage they had in ancient Rome, too, where a rich patrician was expected to assist people who were trying to establish themselves.  I'd not consciously tried to understand Gondolin before, but a strict social structure makes sense in an isolated society such as that, and so does doing one's duty for city and family. Not an easy place for true love to flourish.
